FabLab Passau
A Fab(rication) Lab(oratory) is an open workspace that provides tools and opportunities to experiment, learn and make (almost) everything. The FabLab at Passau University is provided by the Chair of Embedded Systems (EISLab).
What is a FabLab?
FabLabs enable high-tech productions on a smallscale. FabLabs connect all sectors of society, by allowing us to implement ideas that had been exclusive for industrial production. FabLabs allow everyone to create applications and systems in a timely manner through rapid prototyping that relies on technical production systems. A FabLab is all about do-it-yourself and design-it-yourself activities. Here, creative concepts are created, designed and implemented - whether as a prototype with Arduino, laser cut from wood or plastic or as 3D prints. All this follows the motto: (Almost) everything is possible.
"makeUP - Your Design!"
Our FabLab Passau Team
We are looking for support – e.g. as research assistant. To contact or apply for a position, write us an email to fablab@eislab.net.
Our Tools
The Innovation-Lab TAKTICS (Teaching Applied Knowledge Transfer in Innovative Courses and Scenarios) will be currently extended to a new web presentation regarding the equipment in the FabLab.
Further information can be found under ZD.B Innovationlab "TAKTICS".
Demonstration Videos
Three-dimensional printing and scanning
Here you can have a look at our current Maker-Video (german language only) to get to know to our Ultimaker 2 3D-printer!
The FabLab Passau is open to students of the University of Passau and also to interested people* of all ages...
Using our workshop and equipment
The use of the workshop and its machinery and equipment requires mandatory prior instruction. We offer regular introductory courses and trainings, for example:
- Laser Cutter - Introduction Course
- 3D Printer - Introduction Course
- Sketching with Hardware (Ardunio)
Costs
The general operation and maintenance costs are covered by us. The actual costs for the individual use of the equipment are charged to the users under the cost principle. The current cost table is always visible at the FabLab.
The laser cutters are currently about 1.50 EUR per minute (net cut time). Certified material (e.g. particle board, MDF, acrylic, plexiglass, plywood, etc.) can be purchased at cost from us. Generally it is not possible to bring your own materials, since their ingredients are possibly unknown. Exceptions can only be made by individual arrangement.
For the 3D printer filaments (excluding PLA) in many colors are already available (e.g., Orange, Grey, White, Green, Yellow, Blue, Black, ...) and can also be utilized at cost. It is not possible to bring your own filament because the temperature and the flow rate must be set individually upon each change of filament.
Small parts (e.g. screws) and other consumables, can be purchased directly for the prime cost at the FabLab after individual arrangement.
The existing tools can of course be used free of charge.
*University-external users are not allowed to use the equipment on their own, only in conjunction with a member of the laboratory.
