Since March 2013, Prof. Kranz is heading the "Lehrstuhl für Informatik mit Schwerpunkt Eingebettete Systeme" (Chair of Embedded Systems) at the University of Passau. Prior to this appointment, Prof. Kranz headed, as assistant professor (Juniorprofessor), the "Fachgebiet Verteilte Multimodale Informationsverarbeitung" (VMI) (the Distributed Multimodal Information Processing Group) from July 2009 to August 2012 at Technische Universität München. The unit, after the departure of Prof. Kranz, continues to exist as research group at the Institute for Media Technology.
The "Embedded Interactive Systems Laboratory" (EISLab, pronounciation: [aislæb]) is a virtual research and teaching unit. It consists of the staff of the "Lehrstuhl für Informatik mit Schwerpunkt Eingebettete Systeme" (Chair of Embedded Systems) at the "Fakultät für Informatik und Mathematik" (Departmentof Informatics and Mathematics) of the Universität Passau (University of Passau) and the Ph.D. students of Prof. Kranz of the "Forschungsgruppe Verteilte Multimodale Informationsverarbeitung" (Distributed Multimodal Information Processing Group) at the Department for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Technische Universität München.
The EISLab team works mainly on two research areas: embedded systems and human-computer interaction (HCI). The technological trends and developments in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), especially miniaturization, wireless communication standards, and the increase of computing power per die area have led to more and more deployed embedded systems, communication with each other and exchanging data amongst themselves. These distributed systems exchange data autonomously in the context of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, or do interact with human users in the context of human-computer interaction (HCI).
We, in this context in research and teaching, work on research questions in the areas of mobile embedded systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), in the automotive domain and in the field of novel user interfaces for post-desktop systems.
We especially address the application areas of embedded systems in mobile and ubiquitous computing, intelligent environments, human-computer interaction, automotive user interfaces, vehicle-to-x communication, as well as multimodal information processing.
